Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid

Reading goes in and out of fashion in my household. Sometimes I’m reading a book a day and sometimes it’s been a month and my current read is gathering dust. Recently I feel I’m somewhere in between… that was until I picked up Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid and couldn’t put it down.

This book covers some difficult to swallow concepts about privilege and race, and how our choices impact others. I cringed my way through some parts, wanting to shake the character into hearing themselves. The conversation being had with the book is not new, but reading it in this way felt accessible and thought provoking. And while confronting, also highly engaging.

In my opinion it was not just a story about race, it’s a story about impact. About what people will do to prove they are not racist, to prove that they belong and to prove that they’re still revivant. Personally, I wish some of the characters could have grown more, shown they had learnt and that there could have been some kind of resolution. However, in reality that doesn’t always happen.

But while this is a prominent cultural statement of a story, it is also filled with humour and warmth. The relationship between Emira and Briar made me smile from ear to ear and were pure pockets of joy.

It’s a book for the book clubs

It’s a book for those who want to be challenged

It’s a book for those looking for a guide for how not to dump your high school girlfriend
