Yellowface by R. F. Kuang

How to write a polarising protagonist that is more love or hate that marmite 101. Yellow face is the story of a writer who makes a string of interesting choices in the desperation to be seen as a legitimate literary figure. It shows just how far someone will go to write the next best seller and challenges race within the industry.

It poses a complex and challenging question on approriation and who should be able to write certain stories. It questions if the colour of your skin should impact what you have the right to write about. After all, can a white person truly understand the struggles and history of a person of colour? Or is it a case that a good writer should be able to respectfully and sensitively write any culture if they do it right? There was no right or wrong answer to this but showed an intelligence to the craft, sewing seeds within the story that linger and grow well after the last word has been read.

This is definitely worth the read and please as always, tell me your thoughts!

Happy reading
